New Hampshire Poetry and Writing Groups.

The current New Hampshire State Poet Laureate is:
** Alexandria Peary**.
Alexandra Peary holds a PhD in English/Composition from the University of New Hampshire. She is the author of six poetry books and ‘is committed to helping other poets increase their writing confidence, enjoyment, and success’. She was appointed to a five- year term.

The New Hampshire State Council on the Arts provides grants for artists and art groups in Connecticut working in all genres. Writers and poets should go to the link above for information on grant applications and specific literary programs.

The Poetry Society of New Hampshire welcomes all New Hampshire poets, including students. The Society has many activities, including an annual poetry festival, a literary journal entitled ‘The Poets Touchstone literary journal, the group holds poetry contests and when possible, monthly meetings. Individual dues are $25.00 per year. Please see link above for more information.

For the past several years, thousands of New Hampshire high school students have participated in the Poetry Out Loud State recitation competitions, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts.
Your high school is invited to participate!
Poetry Out Loud is a wonderful program for students. The program helps the develop Stage and speaking skills, confidence and a love of poetry. Poetry really needs to be spoken to truly be enjoyed. Poetry Out Loud is a great program for students. To learn how to get your school involved in the competition, please see the link above.

Poetry Slams are events in which adults and students read and perform poetry for awards and prizes. There are many local events and even a National competition. Check with your local poetry group for the nearest Slam event and Slam schedules. The above link is for a weekly event in Manchester. Please see link for details.

The New Hampshire Writers’ Project welcomes all New Hampshire writers of all genres of writing. The group produces webinars, contests and an annual conference. The annual conference will be held online in 2020. The group’s mission statement reads in part: ‘We serve as a resource for writers, publishers, booksellers, literary agents, educators, librarians, and readers’. The Portsmouth Writers Salon welcomes all area writers of all genres and all skill levels. The Writers Salon has groups for poetry, fiction, nonfiction and more. They meet (when possible) at the Portsmouth public library. Please see link above for more details.

Pen Central 'is sponsored by RiverRun Bookstore in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and a part of the Seacoast’s vibrant arts scene since 2007, Pen Central is a hub for writing workshops, tutorials, manuscript consultations and editing, and readings and performances.' The Monadnock Writers’ Group is a group in Peterborough that provides conferences (when possible) to area writers. They also provide writing contests. The group welcomes all area writers. Please see link above for more information.&&&&&&&&&&&

About the author: Steven Robert Heine is an American poet and author. He has spent much of his life supporting poetry projects and events. He is the author of 8 volumes of poetry. In 2011 he was seriously injured in a fall that left him in great pain and almost unable to walk. He suffered a stroke in 2023. Heine receives no disability and relies on a small pension and retirement income. He is no longer able to make public appearances.

Steven Robert Heine is a West Coast poet & author. He has traveled extensively through the United States, including many trips to New Hampshire. Heine has spent his life promoting poetry; serving as founder for many poetry contests. He is the author of fifteen books, including poetry, history and his own short auto-biographies.
